HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sharath Kamal won his 6th CWG Gold medal on Sunday
  • Sharath and Sreeja trumped Javen and Karen of Malaysia in the final
  • Sharath will fight for Gold in men’s singles on Monday

Achanta Sharath Kamal won his 6th Commonwealth Games Gold medal on Sunday, August 7 as the veteran paddler and Sreeja Akula won the mixed doubles table tennis event in Birmingham. Sharath Kamal won his 3rd medal in the ongoing Games in Birmingham.

Sharath Kamal and Sreeja Akula, the reigning national champions, defeated Javen Choong and Karen Lyne of Malaysia 3-1 in the final of the mixed doubles table tennis event. Sharath and Sreeja won the opening game but were pegged back in the second game but the Indian duo kept their calm and composure to win the final in 4 games.

While Sharath Kamal furthered his legacy with his maiden Gold in the mixed doubles category at the Commonwealth Games, the top prize was a deserved reward for Sreeja, who has been in stunning form in Birmingham. Earlier on Sunday, Sreeja lost the women’s singles bronze medal to Yangzi Liu of Australia.

CAN SHARATH ADD ANOTHER GOLD?

Sharath Kamal took his CWG Gold medal tally to 6 and overall medal tally to 12. The 40-year-old led India to their defence of the men’s team Gold medal earlier in the week in Birmingham before teaming up with G Sathiyan to win Silver in the men’s doubles event earlier on Sunday.

Sharath Kamal will be in contention to win his 2nd singles Gold medal when he takes on Liam Pitchford in the men’s singles final on Monday. He defeated Paul Drinkhall in the semi-final match on Sunday. Sathiyan lost the singles semi-final to Pitchford and will fight for bronze on Monday.
