This is one of the revived functions that were found to be most useful in Windows 7. Although the notebook PC has become mainstream in recent years, the desktop PC is still popular for users who require high-performance or work efficient computers. So to these users who want to take advantage of their high-powered PCs and increase their productivity, we recommend the multi-display environment. Using large, high resolution displays in a multi-display environment gives you an unbeatable advantage.
Because there are no screen size or resolution restrictions like in a notebook PC, the desktop multi-display environment can use a flexible combination of screen sizes and resolutions according to your location, budget or application. If so inclined, using the previous EIZO monitor, a resolution of x pixels could be made from 3 monitors, x pixels from 6 monitors, and many more variations can be made.
Most commonly when people want to build a multi-display environment, they start with one monitor, and then later add another one. This way the screen size and resolution can be aligned, but also the color and aesthetics will match. But perhaps more importantly, because the monitors are the same age, any defects in the screen such as color variations can be found early-on by comparing the two monitors next to each other. Another note for those who might be thinking about trying to build a multi-display environment, is that the more monitors you align, the wider your viewing angle will need to be.
In order to be able to see each monitor clearly without having to move, you need to buy a product that has wide viewing angles. Furthermore, the more screens you have the harder it is to avoid light reflecting on your screen and into your eyes.
To prevent this, we recommend buying a monitor with a glare reducing surface, which will make the screens easier to see and will be easier on your eyes. Additionally, as mentioned above we recommend a monitor with a narrow bezel and black border as it is space-saving and increases visibility among other advantages. The Furthermore it has a narrow-frame design of only 6.
Therefore two monitors side by side will only have a gap of What’s New. ClipboardFusion 5. We’re very excited to announce that ClipboardFusion 5. This version fixes a couple of minor issues and improves Macro start times. Enabling Integration with External Ticketing Systems. Here’s how it works:. Top WallpaperFusion Members for June Congratulations to our top contributing members for June ! Now turning the monitors on and off causes no change at all on the windows or icons configuration and it also works when waking up from sleep mode. Scroll down to Multiple displays and under it you will see “Make this my main display” check the box. Same thing I did and it worked the icons stayed there and you dont have to do anything to complicated At the desktop the icons move to the other screen when I hold Ctrl and scroll up and back again when I scroll down.
The Easiest Way To Resolve this, and what has always worked for me is to align the Monitors side by side with the one that is set to primary this is the Monitor that you want the Icons on on the farthest left. Make sure the icons are on the monitor you want them to be displayed on.
Many solutions are in this post how to do that. Make this monitor the Primary Monitor – regardless of the number MS assigns to it. Monitor 2 or Monitor 3 can be Primary. Then drag the primary Monitor to the far left of the select and rearrange Displays setup, whether it is 1 2 or 3. I have exactly the same issue with 3 monitors. When my primary monitor is turned off, the icons move to one of my other monitors and stay there even when the primary monitor is turned back on. Windows scaling is also wrong too.
Wow, this is the solution. Simple and straight forward, stirring us in the face. This actually works for me, after several weeks of toiling and playing with my display, plugging and unplugging etc. I moved all icons to the primary desktop then unplugged the second display’s cable. Then plugged the cable for the sec. Thanks TbWill.
Moved all icons to primary screen. Made an empty folder on second and named it what ever More bad words. Log off. Log on. All in proper location. I use a laptop with a 2nd monitor plugged into the HDMI port. Tthe icons correctly stayed on my primary laptop screen until last week. The answer above worked for me, with an extra step at the start:. I also struggled with this after a w10 update. I was able to finally fix it by setting the screen view settings to ‘Align icons to grid’.
This was annoying me to no ends, ever since Win10 started to behave in that odd that way. But the empty folder suggestion is what cured it. Many thanks for sharing this pain reliefer. The fact that all this effort is just expected to be applied to fix what breaks in updates is ridiculous imo.
I have a 3 monitor setup, and the same thing usually happens if one of the monitors gets disabled while logged into Windows. For instance, my monitor lineup from left to right goes 1,3,2,4 with 4 being my Surround Receiver. I disabled 2 once by accident and all those icons moved to 3, and my desktop icons moved from 3 to 4 which isn’t a display.
When I re-enabled 2, only the desktop icons moved from 4 to So I manually moved everything back. When I booted up again the following day, the icons had moved back. So I moved them again and restated. On reboot, and log in, they moved back once again I restarted. When I logged in, the issue was fixed. I think the cache gets corrupt. Doing what I did forced it to rebuild it I’m guessing.
When the Auto-arrange was on, five icons out of many moved from the primary screen to the secondary. It happened every time I turned the computer on. Moving them back manually, they stayed on the primary until I turned the computer off. When I turned the computer on again, the icons moved automatically to the secondary screen. This fixed the problem:. Move the icons back to the primary manually. Turn off the Auto-arrange.
Turn on the Auto-arrange. The icons did not move any more. Not sure if this has been resolved yet, because I tried just about every solution proposed here without success. The problem was also present using a display port to HDMI converter, so as soon as I connected a second display some of the Icons moved onto the second monitor.

Jun 23, · Multiple desktops, different icons. Hello. So, I know how to use multiple desktops. Does anyone know a way to make it so that for example, Desktop 2 shows no Desktop Icons whereas Desktop 1 will show Desktop Icons? I can accept using 3rd-party software to make this work. – – – Updated – – -. Why was this moved? Jan 16, · Download VirtuaWin – Multiple virtual desktops for free. I recently added a second monitor with HDMI. My primary only allows DVI, and for some reason windows prioritizes HDMI as the primary monitor, so it identifies the secondary monitor as 1, and my primary as 2. I’ve recently run into a strange bug where my desktop icons will always go to the secondary monitor, regardless of which monitor is set as the primary. I’ve tried multiple fixes without success:.
Moving the icons over to the primary monitor. Icons will move to the secondary monitor upon boot or any screen refresh. Deselecting “auto arrange” for desktop icons; The icons will still go to the secondary monitor. I can’t figure this out for the life of me and it’s driving me crazy. There’s no reason managing your screen setup should be this frustrating Try using Win-P to find a solution?
Then right-click Desktop and use Auto-arrange. Then what does Win-P Extend do? So fixing that Primary and Secondary thing may be more important to do first. I think it is possible to have 2 as primary and then the workaround that I mentioned should work. According to your description, I find that some people have the similar issue. Please check the link below to get more information about the issue.
Some methods you could have a try. Hope it will be helpful to you. Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help. If you have feedback for TechNet Subscriber Support, contact tnmff microsoft.
After I extend the screen again over both monitors, the icons split back up. In the display settings, There isn’t an option to designate which monitor is 1 or 2.
Windows is defaulting the monitor with a DVI connection as the primary monitor. What’s also weird is any new item added to desktop such as I installing a new program shows up on my main monitor 2 DVI.
The ‘type here to search’ in its expanded form is on monitor two. I have two 32″ TV displays When i use the monitor numbering drag and drop on multiple displays, my monitor numbers will switch on the drag and drop, but when i ‘identify’ they remain the same. Even when i switch cables in the back I had this problem on two Displayport monitors daisychained. Drove me crazy. Then I found that if I went to Taskbar settings right click on Taskbar and scrolled down to Multiple displays, I could make the desktop icons switch from monitor to monitor by changing “Show taskbar on all displays”.
After doing these 5 steps, my desktop icons now stay on display 1, which is set as my primary display when docked. I was able to resolve this problem by doing the following:. I had the same problem and suddenly found a weird solution To a degree, you can lose a certain amount of sorting, but the icons all move to the other desktop. I am using a similar setup to you, but have the HDMI as primary and DVI secondary, but the icons were switched when I started an old game that used a different Vid resolution initially..
I came here looking for a solution to this annoying icon sorting issue but it seems there isn’t any and what has been suggested are still workarounds. For me this issue happened especially when waking from sleep mode, all my icons would be scrambled on a single monitor. Also, if I would switch off my monitors without going in to sleep mode, my windows and icons would automatically move to the active monitor and at times completely mess up my icons locations.
The only thing that worked for me was a cheap hardware gizmo:. Look up: “monitor detect killer”. Now turning the monitors on and off causes no change at all on the windows or icons configuration and it also works when waking up from sleep mode.

These days notebook PCs equipped with very high definition displays of pixel densities greater than full HD are growing, but when these units are connected to external displays the character and icon sizes can vary significantly between the original notebook PC and external monitor, making it difficult to work with.
If you click on this, you can set the resolutions of the display monitors. As shown above, Windows 10 has a new settings application installed which we recommend you use. To any familiar PC user, the conventional method of using the control panel to display various settings is still possible.
In Windows 10, the Snap Assist function that sticks the window to the edge of the screen is available, and even more convenient.
If you drag the window to the left or right of the screen, the window will expand to fill half of the screen. This is also possible in the extended desktop function where two windows can be placed onto the left and right sides of each monitor, making a total of four open windows.
After snapping the window to either the left or right using Snap Assist, the vacant area on the opposite side will list all other available windows that can be selected to fit that space. This is also a new feature of Windows Additionally, in a multi-display environment, if you are displaying too many windows and your desktop has become messy, click and drag the window you want to view and quickly shake it to minimize all other windows.
You can also press Windows and Home. There are three options to choose how the taskbar can be viewed. But an external display with a mainstream 23 — 24″ full HD x pixels or WUXGA x pixels model, connected to a notebook PC, will display in a similar size to the notebook PC making it familiar to the user, and providing a lot of work space. For example you could do things like compare multiple pages at once in a web browser; create a graph on a spreadsheet and paste it into a presentation while reading a PDF document; do work on one screen and watch videos or view a social media timeline on the other; play a game on one screen while reading a walk-through on the other, or use an external color management monitor to check for correct colors.
Using an external monitor in addition to your notebook PC allows all of these things to be done seamlessly without having to switch between windows. On the other hand, if you have an external monitor that can be raised quite high, it can be situated on top of the notebook — achieving an extended workspace on a narrow desk.
Additionally, if you have an external monitor that is capable of rotating to a vertical portrait position, you can take advantage of the long screen by using it for web pages, SNS timelines, and reading documents. In our examples we used the EIZO This monitor will also suit any photo-retouching and content creation by correctly displaying the sRGB color gamut; i.
Windows utility that can extend the taskbar and the system tray to a second external monitor and move apps from the primary screen.

Ok so it was easy switching to the second display and selecting the icons and dragging them back to the first monitor, but if the desktop was refreshed they all moved back to display 2.
When I saw this post I knew at once it held most of the answer I was looking for, but I tried following it and it didn’t seem to address the issue until I started fooling around and testing further. Single Left Click on the desktop, Ctrl-A, on the screen where most of your icons are at Click and drag the bottom-left most desktop shortcut and drag it overtop the last or bottom-right most shortcut in the rightmost column – you will see a horizontal I beam appear over that shortcut, release the left click.
This forces shortcuts that may have been dragged to other screens inadvertently to reorganize and snap back, Auto Arranging and Aligning to grid on the primary monitor. For me, I was able to reproduce and repeat the results. For many others of you that read this and want to criticize my first post, I have been using a computer a while, and you might want to give this a shot, pretty sure it works.

Therefore two monitors side by side will only have a gap of Another feature is the automatic dimming function Auto EcoView which leads to less eye fatigue, and less power consumption.
Whether you use a notebook PC or the more conventional desktop PC, if you want to increase the work efficiency of Windows 10, using multi-display is highly effective. Some important things to consider when choosing a product is of course the image quality, but also wide viewing angles, glare reducing specifications, a narrow bezel that is easy to see past, a stand mechanism that allows for a wide range of installation locations, functions to prevent eye fatigue and power saving measures.
Even compared to a PC, a monitor is still a possible long-term investment. Therefore we recommend that you do not compromise on quality; in the medium to long term if you think of the comprehensive savings made through increased work productivity, reduced burdens on your body, and reduced power consumption, high-quality display products may offer higher value.
With this update come a few new and changed features, not mentioned in this article. Read the following article to find out about some of the changes relating to monitor settings and how to use them. The FlexScan EV has a narrow frame design of only 6. This requires only My primary only allows DVI, and for some reason windows prioritizes HDMI as the primary monitor, so it identifies the secondary monitor as 1, and my primary as 2.

Cause the auto arange icons and all the other suggestion did not work for me and my main display never switched to a different one. Thanks for this – it’s the only solution that worked without downloading new software. Office Office Exchange Server. Not an IT pro? Resources for IT Professionals. Sign in. United States English.
