The list of highest civilian awards by the Government of India has been released on the eve of Republic Day 2023. This year a maximum of 12 awards have been conferred to the people from Maharashtra. Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat each bagged 8 awards, whereas seven people from Andhra Pradesh have been conferred with the civilian awards.
This year, President has approved the conferment of 106 Padma Awards which includes 6 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan, and 91 Padma Shri Awards.
In terms of field, the maximum number (39) of awards have been given to the field of Art and Culture. Literature and Education (15), and Science and Technology (10) are the categories that bagged second and third maximum awards.
What are Padma Awards?
Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian Awards in the country and are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, science, engineering, social work, public affairs, medicine, trade and industry, sports, literature and education, civil service, etc. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
Padma Vibhushan – is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service.
Padma Bhushan – is for distinguished service of high order.
Padma Shri – is for distinguished service in any field.
These Awards will be conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which will be held at Rashtrapati Bhawan in the month of March or April.
