Veteran all-rounder Ellyse Perry is likely to take part in the Commonwealth Games 2022 as a “specialist batter” as she continues to recover from a back stress fracture. The 31-year-old faced back issues and couldn’t play a few games in the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand earlier in March and April.
Perry picked up five wickets from seven matches in the World Cup, including a three-wicket haul against Stafanie Taylor’s West Indies. She also performed to expectations with the bat, having scored 163 runs at an average of 54.33 with a top score of 68 against Sophie Devine’s White Ferns.
Australia recently named their squad for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham later this year. However, team physiotherapist Kate Beerworth mentioned that the New South Wales-born cricketer may only bat in the tournament due to his recent tussle with injuries.
“Ellyse is … expected to play as a batter. Her availability to bowl will be dependent on her progress in the coming weeks and on the medical advice,” Beerworth was quoted as saying in a news release.

Meg Lanning (capt), Rachael Haynes, Darcie Brown, Nicola Carey, Ashleigh Gardner, Grace Harris, Alyssa Healy, Jess Jonassen, Alana King, Tahlia McGrath, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Amanda-Jade Wellington
Australia also won’t be having the services of fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck, all-rounder Sophie Molineux and spinner Georgia Wareham, who all are yet to recover from their respective injuries. Australia are set to start their campaign against India and will also face Barbados. The Aussies recently won the Women’s World Cup after defeating Heather Knight’s England in the final.
