Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir heaped praise on left-handed batter Kyle Mayers after the latter scored a sparkling century in the third ODII between West Indies and the Netherlands on Saturday, June 4 at the VRA Ground in Amstelveen.
Mayers went on to score 120 runs off 106 balls with eight fours and seven sixes, helping the visitors score 308/5 after they elected to bat first. Mayers came to bat in the 12th over and took the attack to the opposition bowlers right from the outset.
He was also involved in a crucial 184-run stand for the second wicket with Shamarh Brooks, who stayed unbeaten on 101 off 115. Mayers perished after right-arm medium pacer Bas de Leede got rid of him.
Gambhir, in the meantime, took to his official Instagram account and wrote, “Absolutely sensational! Truly a great knock!” Mayers was a part of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, although he didn’t get to play a single game.
West Indies went on to win the match by 20 runs after right-arm pacer Shermon Lewis accounted for three scalps. The spinners, Akeal Hosein and Hayden Walsh Jr. also picked up two wickets apiece. Max O’Dowd scored 89 runs for the Dutch team, but his knock went in vain. Dowd’s opening partner Vikramjit Singh also made a fifty, but to no avail.
As far as Mayers is concerned, back in February 2021, he became only the fifth batter in Test history to score a double century on debut. The southpaw accomplished the feat during West Indies’ Test against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.
His knock also guided the Caribbean team to the fifth-highest successful run chase of all time in the purest format of the game.
