Must Read

A functional home with multi-functional spaces is the new checkbox that young homeowners are ticking as the world moves towards normalcy. From multi-functional furniture to sustainable décor items, millennials are looking to live in spaces that will serve the functionality of working out in the morning, working from home during the day and lounging in the evenings. This pandemic-driven home trend promotes an environment that is efficient, adaptable and aesthetically pleasing. The rising preference for functional spaces has extended the demand for multi-functional furniture resulting in brands introducing collections that cater to this particular category of products.

Why is it popular?

The pandemic created a market for multi-functional furniture because people spent maximum time indoors, ensuring demand for open space. But a key driving factor behind the furniture demand was the real estate. According to PropTiger.com, home sales have shown significant improvement in the period between July and September 2021. “Rise in population and urbanization taking place globally, the demand for real estate has become so high. Development of urban housing forced habitants to prefer smaller spaces, which caused the increase in demand for furniture that can fit in small space and can carry out multiple functions,” says Pranjal Agarwal, Founder, Furnmill

Who is buying it?
According to a recent survey done by Furnmill, 58 percent of the Millennial in India and nearly half of Generation Z ( 46 percent) are likely to shop for home furnishing online. People between the age group 25-45 years are the main consumers investing in furniture that screamed minimalism and functionality. Tapping on to these requirements brands are designing items that are chic and functional. “Something as simple as a coffee table has been innovated in ways to be used as a storage unit, display unit while serving a complex look. And why would anyone settle for just a product when they can purchase the same product with multiple functions for the same price,” says Lokendra Singh Ranawat, CEO, Wooden Street.

Free-standing media units or tables are truly one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture. And the best part is that it comes with in-built sockets which sort out the issue of ugly tangled wires. A free-standing work desk includes an in-built charging socket as well as USB ports. A lot of brands will be rolling out such concept units soon in India and they will range somewhere between Rs 40,000 to Rs 90,000.

Transform your old furniture into functional furniture!

Turn chairs into a mini sofa:

It’s not one man’s job and you will need a few extra hands to achieve this, but it’s worth it. “Gather the chairs and line them up, you can use two or three. Try to use chairs of the same height, it will make it look put together. Sand the chairs and measure the area and accordingly buy plywood and foam. Cut the plywood according to the desired measurement and then stick the foam on top with wood glue and nail it into the chairs,” says Rachita Bhagnani, an interior designer.

Turn old shelves into movable racks

For cupboards that do not have enough space or for the kitchen which isn’t modular, this option can help. If you have old shoe racks or shelves lying in your storage, take them out and transform them. “Sand it if wood before painting it and if using a metal one then, directly paint it with any colour you like. Attach wheels at the bottom that you can buy online and it’s easy to attach. These can be used in the kitchen, bathroom and cupboard,” says Rachita.
