Cooper Kupp, Jonathan Taylor and T.J. Watt had terrific seasons, but here’s the truth about their 2021 NFL Most Valuable Player award cases: They never had a chance.
At this point, The Associated Press’ NFL MVP club should have a “QBs only” sign hanging above the front door. A non-quarterback has captured the award just once in the last 14 seasons. Former Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is the lone player who was able to interrupt the quarterback streak, and he had to pull off one of the greatest rushing seasons in league history in order to take home the hardware.
This year’s NFL MVP race came down to — shocker! — a couple of quarterbacks: Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. Both stars have strong MVP cases, but there isn’t much suspense here. The guy in the Packers jersey is going to receive the trophy.
How do we know Rodgers is already a lock to be the MVP? And why is there still some controversy surrounding the award? Let’s dive into the Most Valuable Player discussion.

In terms of yardage, nobody had a better passing season than Brady. The Buccaneers quarterback threw for a league-leading 5,316 yards, the third-highest single-season total in NFL history. He also had the highest number of completions (485), attempts (719) and passing touchdowns (43).
However, Rodgers was more efficient with his passes. He was third among qualified quarterbacks in completion percentage (68.9) behind only Joe Burrow (70.4) and Kyler Murray (69.2). He also led the NFL in passing touchdown percentage (7.0) and interception percentage (0.8 percent).
Individual numbers: Check. Team success: Check. Importance to the franchise: Check.
No wonder these are the top two MVP candidates.

The NFL All-Pro Team voting results are a massive spoiler.
Rodgers earned 34 of the 50 possible votes for the All-Pro quarterback spot, and Brady received the remaining 16 votes. The 50 AP voters who select the All-Pro team are also the voters for the MVP award, meaning Rodgers should be No. 1 on the MVP list when it is officially revealed.
It’s possible some MVP voters chose to go the non-quarterback route, but as previously mentioned, it doesn’t seem as though Kupp, Taylor, Watt and others did enough to jump Rodgers or Brady. It also wouldn’t make much sense for several voters to place Rodgers above Brady on the All-Pro ballot, then drop him below Brady on the MVP ballot.
All signs point to Rodgers being the 2021 NFL MVP.
Veteran NFL writer and AP voter Hub Arkush declared in early January that he would not cast his MVP vote for Rodgers because he is “the biggest jerk in the league.”
“I just think that the way he’s carried himself is inappropriate,” Arkush said on 670 The Score. “I think he’s a bad guy, and I don’t think a bad guy can be the most valuable guy at the same time.”
Rodgers fired back at Arkush, calling him an “absolute bum” and telling reporters Arkush only has a problem with him because he is unvaccinated.
“His problem isn’t with me being a bad guy or being the biggest jerk in the league because he doesn’t know me and doesn’t know anything about me,” Rodgers said. “His problem is I’m not vaccinated. So, if he wants to go on a crusade and collude and come up with an extra letter to put on the award just for this season and make it the Most Valuable Vaccinated Player, then he should do that.”
Arkush later admitted he made a “big mistake” and shouldn’t have publicly discussed his voting plans. Unfortunately for Arkush, the damage was already done, and it led to plenty of speculation about other voters possibly penalizing Rodgers for off-the-field matters.
Now that the All-Pro voting results have been released, though, it appears Arkush was only speaking for himself or, at most, a very small portion of the voting body.
Rodgers could separate himself from Brady, Brett Favre, Jim Brown and Johnny Unitas with a fourth MVP trophy. Only former Colts and Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning would have more NFL MVP awards than Rodgers if the voting plays out as expected.

The Premier League is considered by many to be the strongest and most difficult league in the world and the 2021-22 season is holding to form, with places hotly contested up and down the table.
Although marred by COVID-19 disruptions, the races are compelling. Man City has pulled ahead with a commanding lead, but Liverpool (and possibly Chelsea) can still make a race of it in the second half of the season. The Reds would seem to be the most likely challenger standing in the way of Pep Guardiola’s fourth title in the last five seasons.
Other spots throughout the table are just as important, with teams fighting for Champions League and European places, while others are battling to avoid relegation. A snapshot of each race follows below.

Manchester City currently holds a 12-point lead atop the Premier League table, and FiveThirtyEight has the Citizens at 84 percent to win the Premier League title (down from 88 percent) after a 1-1 draw at Southampton on Jan. 22.
Liverpool and Chelsea can still make things interesting if City continues to slip up. Liverpool now sits 12 points back and still has two games in hand, while Chelsea has a bit more work to do to catch back up. The Blues are in a tough spot, with just two wins in their last six and languishing 13 points behind. It feels that their title chase may be about up.
Outside of these three, no other team has a realistic shot at winning the Premier League title as it would take a cataclysmic collapse by multiple top teams to see the likes of West Ham, Arsenal, Spurs, and Manchester United to enter the mix.

The Champions League race — only four spots are available and they go to the top four teams in the table — is probably the most fascinating, as a number of teams are in the mix and only four can make it through.
Man City, Chelsea, and Liverpool all seem to be trending towards comfortably finishing in the top four, as FiveThirtyEight puts each of them at over 90 percent to clinch a berth in next season’s Champions League.

The fourth and final Champions League spot is the one everyone has their eyes on. Manchester United currently sits in fourth place thanks to a dramatic win over the Hammers, but Arsenal and Spurs are in position to overtake the Red Devils. West Ham will definitely remain in the mix, but David Moyes’s team has played at least one more game than the others around them.
FiveThirtyEight ‘s projections have Tottenham and Arsenal in a duel for that spot, with Spurs at 39 percent to take fourth after the stunning win over Leicester City in mid-January, and Arsenal at 35 percent. Man United is down to just 15 percent after the draw with Burnley dropped their chances further. West Ham currently occupies the fourth position, but having played so many more games than those behind them, the Hammers sit at just eight percent.

In addition to the Champions League, there are two Europa League berths up for grabs: one goes to the fifth-place Premier League team and the other goes to the FA Cup winner. There is also a Europa Conference League berth that goes to the League Cup winner.
However, if the FA Cup or League Cup winners have already qualified to the Champions League or Europa League through other means, the berth automatically assigned to the cup winner is transferred to the next highest team in the Premier League standings that has not already qualified for a European competition. In that scenario, finishing sixth or seventh could also lead to a spot in Europe.

So until there’s clarity with the cup scenarios, we will assume that fifth, sixth, and seventh are all in contention for European berths. And with Leicester City and Tottenham having games in hand, they might have a slight edge for now.

Premier League revenue streams are astronomical in the football world, so suffering relegation from the English top flight is a costly proposition. Teams fight as hard as possible to avoid the bottom three places and keep from meeting this fate.
With the bottom four teams within five points, the relegation race is wide open.
For long stretches this season it appeared that Norwich City would almost certainly be headed for the drop, but on the heels of a managerial change and big results against Everton and Watford, the Canaries are one point above the relegation zone.

Newcastle, under new ownership, is already spending big money to improve the squad in the January transfer window with plenty of time left yet to score points. The Magpies’ Jan. 22 win at Leeds United could loom large at season’s end.
Things are not looking too bright for Burnley, especially with star forward Chris Wood making the switch to Tyneside. But their games in hand give the Clarets a fighting chance. The 0-0 draw in the Feb. 5 makeup game against fellow relegation candidate Watford was not an ideal result, but it was a good result for the Hornets under new manager Roy Hodgson, who took over for Claudio Ranieri.
Leeds and Everton started in a much more advantageous position with some padding, but they have looked lost at times this season and it seems inevitable that they will be sucked into the vortex.
