Priyanka Chopra felt ‘freedom’ after freezing her eggs ‘in her early 30s’; gynecologist explains all you need to know about this procedure

Priyanka Chopra became a mom to daughter Malti Marie in January 2022, when she was 39 years old – about 3 years after getting married to Nick Jonas. The couple welcomed the baby via surrogacy.
Recently on Dax Shepard’s Podcast, she shared that she froze her eggs in her early 30s, as she “had not met the person with whom I wanted to have children.”

“I always knew I wanted kids and that was one of the reasons I didn’t want to date Nick because I was like I don’t know if he would want kids at 25,” the global star shared.
Priyanka added how freezing her eggs gave her a sense of freedom and reduced her anxiety.

She said, “I felt such freedom, I did it in my early thirties and I could continue on an ambitious warpath, I wanted to achieve and I wanted to get to a certain place in my career. Also, I had not met the person with whom I wanted to have children. So, with that anxiety-inducing, and with my mom who is an ob-gyn (obstetrician-gynecologist) going, ’36…just do it’”.

What is egg freezing?

“The process involves stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, which are then harvested and frozen using a specialized technique called vitrification. The frozen eggs can be stored for several years and used when the woman is ready to use them, either for fertility preservation or for in vitro fertilization (IVF) if natural conception is not possible,” explains Dr. Aruna Kalra, Director, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram.

Benefits of egg freezing

“Egg freezing can also provide peace of mind for women who are concerned about age-related fertility decline,” shares Dr. Kalra, adding, “It can help women who are facing medical treatments that may damage their eggs, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.”

“Additionally, as women age, they may be at risk for developing various health conditions such as diabetes, fibroids, high blood pressure, and endometriosis. These conditions can impact fertility and the ability to conceive a healthy pregnancy which makes egg freezing a viable option,” explains Dr. Kalra, adding, “Overall, egg freezing provides an option for women to take control of their reproductive health and plan for their future.”

How expensive is egg freezing

According to Apollo Fertility, the cost of egg freezing is between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 100,000 in India. In addition, there is a recurring annual cost to preserve the eggs in the frozen state, which is between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 30,000.
