There were mixed results in store for Indian fans today as PV Sindhu stormed into the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Championships on Thursday, 28 April. The morning was in India’s favour as Sindhu along with India’s men’s doubles pairing Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won their respective games, but Indian hearts were once again broken by Saina Nehwal’s loss against world number 16, Wan Zhi
Sindhu after trailing 9-11 in the first game took control and won her match against Singapore’s Yue Yann Jaslyn Hooi by 21-16, 21-16. While Sindhu continued with her exploits, Indian men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankreddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Japan’s Akira Koga and Taichi Saito with a scoreline of 21-17, 21-15.

The Koga-Saito pair walked into the game with the reputation of defeating All England champs Maulana/Fikri in the opening round.
Saina Nehwal had taken court in her singles game and was leading her first game by a massive margin of 10-2. However, she ended up losing her second and third games. The scorecard of the match read 21-12, 7-21, 13-21 in the favour of the Chinese opponent. Later in the day, Kidambi Srikanth will also be seen in action against China’s Weng Hong Yang in men’s singles game.
Earlier on day 1 of the tournament, big names like Kento Momota and Lakshya Sen were knocked out of the competition, sending shockwaves across the badminton fraternity. World number nine Lakshya Sen lost to Li Shi Feng of China in the very first round. In a three-game match, Lakshya was leading the final game by 17-10, but ended up losing 19-21 against a much lower ranked opponent.
