Russia-Ukraine war news updates: Pope Francis has condemned the Russia-Ukraine war, saying that it has only resulted in rivers of blood and tears in Ukraine.

Pope Francis on Sunday called for an immediate end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying that it is a war that is “bringing about death, destruction and poverty”.

“Rivers of blood and tears are flowing in Ukraine. This is not just a military operation, but a war that brings death, destruction and poverty,” European media outlet Nexta quoted him as saying during his weekly address to crowds gathered at St Peter’s Square.

“In that martyred country the need for humanitarian assistance is growing by the hour,” the pope said, speaking from a window overlooking the square. “War is madness, please stop.”

His comments were the strongest yet on the Russia-Ukraine crisis, although he did not mention Russia directly.

The 85-year-old Pope Francis on February 25, the day after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, visited the Russian embassy in Vatican City to air his concerns about the crisis between the two nations.
