By India Today Web Desk: Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof had no qualms in admitting that her side made “some mistakes” as a bowling unit against India in their opening match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

Pakistan suffered a seven-wicket defeat against India in Cape Town on Sunday, February 12. Pakistan were well in the game when India needed 47 runs off the final five overs. However, Pakistan’s bowling unit coupled with poor fielding let them down as India chased down 150-run target in the penultimate over.

“We were good at many times, but we did some mistakes as a bowling unit,” said Maroof at the post-match presentation. “Lot of learnings, planning to be better next game.”

Maroof, along with Ayesha Naseem, stitched an unbeaten 81-run partnership for the fifth wicket to help Pakistan post 149/4 after opting to bat. Pakistan captain Maroof paced her innings to finish with 68 not out, while Naseem played a late cameo of 43 not out off 25 balls on a two-paced pitch.

The Pakistan captain said that her players played well according to the roles they were given and heaped praise on 18-year-old Ayesha Naseem. “The roles we have given to the girls, they played well. The role Ayesha had was crucial at the time,” said Maroof.

Jemimah Rodrigues (53*) and Richa Ghosh (31*) made the most of Pakistan’s poor fielding with their back-to-back boundaries. Rodrigues hit the winning four in the penultimate over to help India clinch two early points.

Meanwhile, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur lauded Pakistan’s batting but stressed that her players wanted to do well for the team. “Pakistan batted well but end of the day we wanted to win the game.

“Jemimah and Richa batted really well. All the players are keen to do well for the team. Whoever is getting an opportunity is pushing themselves. Good sign for us. Every match is important, no matter the opponent, but obviously Pakistan is a big game. We’ll love to have some time in the nets. We want to work on a few things,” said Harmanpreet.
