By India Today Web Desk: Deepti Sharma was happy after she was picked to play for the UP Warriorz in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The all-rounder fetched INR 2.60 crore from the Uttar Pradesh-based franchise.
Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants also tried to bag Deepti, but it was the 25-year-old Warriorz who came up trumps. Deepti said that she would try and perform well for the UP team in the upcoming WPL.
“Obviously, it is a nice opportunity. I will look to do well for the UP team. I am looking forward to it. This is a new beginning because we had been waiting for this for a long time. My role will be to do well. Works well for all Indian players, who were waiting for it. Will aim to contribute to the UP team,” Deepti was quoted as saying to Sports 18.
“We wanted to have Deepti, she’s from Agra, UP. It’s to have a connection with the UP fan base. She’s young as well,” Rajesh Sharma, the MD of the Warriorz, said.
Deepti is currently plying her trade in the ongoing edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup on South African soil. Along with Deepti, the Warriors picked up Australia’s Alyssa Healy, England’s Sophie Ecclestone, Australia’s Tahlia McGrath, India’s Rajeshwari Gayakwad and South Africa’s Shabnim Ismail among big names.
Deepti has a truckload of experience at the international level, having played 88 T20Is in which she has picked up 97 wickets at an economy rate of 6.12. Deepti has also scored 914 runs with two half-centuries and a top score of 64.
